Why storytime will help your child’s early development

Sharing stories, talking and singing every day helps your child’s development in lots of ways. Reading books from day one can help your child become familiar with sounds, words, language and the value of books. Reading can spark your child’s imagination, stimulate curiosity and help his or her brain development. Your little one can learn the difference between ‘real’ and ‘make-believe’ and understand change and new or frightening events, and also the strong emotions that can go along with them.

You don’t always have to read the book word for word, we recommend also looking and pointing out different pictures helps your child learn how to hold a book, turn the pages and use their imaginations to be storytellers.

At Little Kingdom, we love reading books to the children in our care. It creates a special time and helps the bonding process.

We encourage our families to make books part of every child’s daily routine at home and at childcare. That’s why we have developed our Little Kingdom Library – a free service for parents to loan books. We are adding new books each week and welcome recommendations and donations of books from parents who might want to share them with other families.

To spark some inspiration, we also wanted to share our top ten books to read your little ones:

1. The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson

2. Pete the Sheep by Jackie French

3. Hairy Maclary series by Lynley Dodd

4. Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak

5. The Terrible Plop by Ursula Duborsarsky

6. Stuck by Oliver Jeffers

7. It’s A Book by Lane Smith

8. Imagine by Alison Lester

9. Olivia the Pig by Ian Falconer

10. Some Dogs Do by Jez Alborough

Happy reading!
